Bericap Wins Two Oscars at French Packaging Awards

12 February 2008

Bericap's SuperShorty® range of lightweight plastic closures received two Oscars de l'Emballage 2007 awards from the French Packaging Institute at an awards ceremony held at the Chamber of Commerce in Paris last Novemeber. The ceremony was attended by 200 key professionals from the packaging industry.

The Oscars, two of twelve which were granted to the packaging industry this year, acknowledged the SuperShorty range's optimised performance in realtion to packaging production, and its continued contribution to the environment at large.

During their acceptance speech, Bericap maintained that SuperShorty not only provides outstanding packaging performances for carbonated beverages in terms of tightness, security and ergonomic comfort, but also demonstrates BERICAP's commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of it's products within the packaging industry.

BERICAP went on to deliver some of its latest Carbon Footprint (CF) calculations, including readings for resin production and transportation, for production of energy and for transportation of packaging components to the fillers.

Based on those calculations, the replacement of traditional 28 mm plastic closures at 3.20 g for carbonated soft-drinks (CSD) used with a PCO 1810 PET neck finish at 5.05 g by this new 28mm SuperShorty closure at 2.40 g used with the new PCO 1881 PET neck finish at 3.82 g would create the following savings on non renewable raw material (HDPE and PET) and reductions in green house gas emissions expressed in g of CO2 equivalent (CF) for any bottle, 2 g savings in resins and 15 g less CO2 emissions in atmosphere (CF) for 1 billion bottles, 2 000 tons of resin savings (between 2.5 and 3 million Euros worth) and 15 000 tons less of CF) for 500 billion bottles (world market estimate for beverages): savings of 1 million tons of resins and 7.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.

Such world CF savings would correspond to the CO2 equivalent emissions of 20 million cars during one year or of 14 000 flights from Paris to New York!
