UK Firms to Use Lighter Wine Bottles

29 August 2007

Use of lighter-weight wine bottles in the UK is set to save more than 6,000t of glass packaging a year, Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) says.

WRAP says supermarkets Tescos and Morrisons, as well as wine brand owners Constellation Europe and PLB Wines, have all confirmed they are working to use lighter bottles.

The changes will affect close to 90 million bottles of wine and save 4,500t of carbon a year.

WRAP glass technology manager Andy Dawe says the environmental benefits of the move will be huge.

"It is great to see the industry making such significant progress of optimising packaging which will have environmental, consumer and economic benefits," he says.
