Packaging Innovations Weekly Wrap - Efes Beer Launched with Built-In Opener

18 June 2008

Turkish glassmaker Sisecam has introduced a beer bottle with a built-in bottle opener.

An indentation in the bottom of the bottle is able to remove metal bottle lids, which will be used in Efes beer.

First introduced in France in 1935, the opener was remade and adapted for Sisecam, bottle supplier for Efes Russia, to boost sales and capture the attention of demanding Russian consumers.

TOPCHIM RELEASES WAX ALTERNATIVE

TopChim has released an environmental friendly, patented, nano-dispersed biopolymer to substitute wax emulsions in super hydrophobic paper and cardboard packaging.

TopScreen DS13, the result of a two-year research programme, is a new coating technology for paper and cardboard that counters the disadvantages of using wax emulsions while maintaining the excellent water barrier performance.

The new biopolymer is of vegetable origin, while most used wax emulsions are produced from petrochemicals.

This biopolymer shows other important advantages for the surface treatment of paper and cardboard compared to the use of wax emulsions.

TopScreen DS13 requires no stabilisers even with a high solid content, while viscosity remains low and coating machines using TopScreen DS13 can simply be rinsed with water.
